Young Onset Dementia (YOD) Service

The Young Onset Dementia (YOD) Service is a Greater Glasgow and Clyde health-board wide service for people under the age of 65 years, their families and carers. The service accepts referrals from Adult CMHTs and Older People’s CMHTs for complex YOD cases, where specialist input is required. The YOD service works in partnership with the referring team, providing consultation, training, and interventions. The YOD teams consists of two Clinical Psychologists, a Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN), and secretarial support.

The YOD service can offer consultation on the assessment of people under 65 presenting with a decline in their cognitive and/or daily functioning when dementia is suspected. When a diagnosis is confirmed, the YOD service can work in partnership with the referring team and offer specialist interventions to people with a YOD diagnosis and their families, as well as support and training to other services involved in their care. Interventions include psychoeducation on rare types of dementia, support with adjustment to diagnosis, family/carer support and education, interventions aiming to reduce stress and distress in dementia, as well as groups for people with YOD and family/carers.
