Emergency Care Planning

Emergency and future planning helps you plan for the care of an adult in case of emergencies or if you’re no longer able to care for them.

It makes provisions for occasions or circumstances when you can’t fulfil your caring role, and it sets out the practical arrangements for short-term, unplanned periods.

What counts as an emergency?

An emergency can be defined as an illness, accident, personal crisis or event which unexpectedly results in the carer being separated from the cared-for person. This might be on a short or long-term basis or because the cared-for personal needs have changed.

It might include:

  • A family funeral
  • A transport delay
  • A family illness
  • A planned or unplanned admission to hospital
  • A last-minute medical or dental appointment
  • A personal accident affecting the carer
