Dementia Subtypes

‘Dementia’ is an umbrella term which is used to describe different conditions which affect the way the brain works.

While Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, there are also other common types including Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, and Frontotemporal Dementia. There are also rarer types of dementia.

Not all types of dementia affect memory – sometimes people’s behaviour or personality changes before any other problems are noticed.

Dementia affects an estimated 90,000 people in Scotland, and approximately 3,000 of these people will be under 65 years old.
